Looking for some wholesome and fun entertainment for the little ones? Well, fret not. Check out this list of kid-friendly theatre performances that's guaranteed to keep the young (and young at heart) happy!

1. The Amazing Celestial Race

On your marks… get set… GO! Celebrate the Lunar New Year with your loved ones at The Amazing Celestial Race – a rambunctious musical inspired by the legendary competition at the heart of the Chinese Zodiac!

Join all the animals in the Heavenly Kingdom as they get fighting fit to take part in the big race hosted by the Jade Emperor.

To make it across the finish line, contestants must survive diabolical detours, a raging river… and one another. Every animal is raring to go, and ready to fight until the bitter end.

Because this is no ordinary race. It’s a chance for everlasting glory – the opportunity to become a legend. Only 12 coveted prizes are up for grabs, and only one animal will emerge the ultimate champion.

2. PLAYtime! 2021

PLAYtime! is an interactive kids’ theatre series that aims to spark creativity and encourage learning through the performing arts. Here are the four productions that will be launched this year:

Amma's Sarees

Saratha and Rathi live together in a peaceful home, playing hide-and-seek and, telling each other amazing imaginative stories to pass the day. Saratha loves her job as a printmaker! She works with colours, designs and patterns on her sarees. Rathi wants to join in the fun too!

But Rathi soon realises something, or rather, someone is missing. She doesn’t know where he has gone, or if he is coming home.

Saratha puts on a brave face, to help Rathi be strong. The mother-daughter pair go on a journey through stories, song, laughter, some tears and lots and lots of colourful brilliant sarees to find a space where they can truly rely on each other and discover how to be the best family they could ever be.

I Nak Fly (I Want to Fly)

Deonn is intrigued by a bird flying past their house. How beautiful the bird looks, zooming here and there. What wonderful wings it has! Can she also fly? She wishes she had wings too.

She decides an adventure is in order! Inspired by penguins and all the other wonderful and colourful birds that come in different shapes, sizes and patterns, she sets out to learn from the different creatures she encounters along the way.

Deonn’s mother is afraid for her, comforting her when things get too loud and overwhelming. But how can she trust her child to be brave when she is afraid of the smallest things? Join Mother and Deonn as they find a way to be braver together.

Karung Guni Boy

Things come alive around Karung Guni Boy! With the awesome power of his imagination, he can transform everyday objects into fantastical items.

One day, his friendly neighbour gets hurt and cannot get around as easily as before. Can Karung Guni Boy invent something to help her out?

Follow the adventures of Karung Guni Boy, a heart-warming story about learning to care for the world and people around us.

The Noisy Forest

Everything can be made into music. In The Noisy Forest, noise and sound, movement and play are all blended into one.

Bang, Clap, Snap! Dance around the noisy forest. There are so many sounds to be made, and vibrations to encounter, so many new noises to discover!

3. MarchOn 2021: The Feelings Farm

On a trip to Kranji, three children find themselves lost on the Feelings Farm where emotions are shifting landscapes they must learn to journey through, both together and alone. Guided by a mysterious Cloud, they tumble through the Jungle of Joy, brave the Field of Fear, sail across the Swamp of Sadness, and explore other familiar feelings. Come along for a magical adventure that will surprise and move you.

The Feelings Farm uses music, movement, poetry and multimedia to help children name and understand emotions with compassion. Recommended for ages 6 and up, the musical draws from real experiences of children in Singapore and hopes to give children and adults alike the language to have honest conversations about our feelings.

4. The Rattle King

The Rattle King awakes from deep sleep to find out what all the ruckus is about. It turns out that his jesters and the children are making so much noise that it is impossible for him to have any peaceful rest! Grumpy and groggy, he approaches them intending to reprimand his subjects, only to realise that he personally contributes to the sound and mess too!

Join The Rattle King in his journey to rediscover himself, in a musical celebration of empathy, harmony and cacophony.

Note:
This is a pilot trial performance with up to 100 audience members. No tickets will be issued. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

5. VCH Community Concert

SSO’s free community concerts are making a long-awaited return this March at the Victoria Concert Hall! Both concerts will be conducted by Joshua Tan and will include performances of works by Grieg and Tchaikovsky.

6. Peter & Blue’s School Holiday

A brand-new children’s ballet, Peter & Blue’s School Holiday will spark imagination in children with its cheery brilliance and playful storyline. The hour-long ballet features engaging live story-telling and whimsical choreography that will ignite wonder and excitement in the little ones.

Join the ever-inquisitive Peter, his dog, Blue, and his cat, Calico, as they frolic at the sandy beach and greet the friendly animals at the zoo. Peter and Blue’s School Holiday is part of a four-part ballet series, created by Janek Schergen, as a performance for the young ones to enjoy in the theatre.

Children will get to participate in a meet-and-greet with the dancers and photo taking session with them after each performance.
