Launched in December 2021 by Far East Organization, Baker X aims to support home-based bakers by providing them with an opportunity to have first-hand experience running a brick-and-mortar storefront and interacting with customers face-to-face with a fully fitted baking studio and a 10-seater café.

Patrons can dine in or takeaway the baked goods at the café on Level 4 of Orchard Central (opposite Genki Sushi). The café is operated in tandem with social enterprise, Foreword Coffee Roasters.

There will be a line-up of bakers throughout the year, and each baker will be in residence for between 2 to 6 weeks.

Signatures

Signatures include Ondeh Balls ($14.80 small bottle, $18.80 medium bottle) filled with gula melaka mixed with shredded coconuts and slow cooked to achieve deep caramel flavours. The aromatic mixture is encased with a pandan cookie dough made from premium butter, for that melt-in-the-mouth texture.

For a prosperous variation, the Pineapple Balls ($14.80 small bottle, $18.80 medium bottle) feature a handmade pineapple centre enveloped in buttery dough, a perfect gift for all occasions.

The Almond Chocolate Chip Cookies ($2.80 per 3-inch cookie) are chock full of Callebaut 54.5% chocolate chips and almond nibs for the addictive crunchy bite.

Mid-Autumn Specials

In time for Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the bestsellers include the coveted Shanghai Mooncakes which are a class of their own. Consisting of light and crumbly pastry crust, the baked treats showcase a variety of handmade flavourful fillings such as Walnut with Yolk ($5.80), Red Bean with Yolk ($5.80), Lotus with Melon Seeds ($4.80), and Pandan Lotus with Melon Seeds ($4.80). The mooncakes are available individually or in a box of 6 pieces, the Shanghai Mooncake – Assorted Set ($30.80).

Cakes

Other favourites to look out for are Martina’s (@bellonanasg) popular moist Banana Loaf ($3.80) loaded with mashed bananas.

Also not to be missed are Doris’ (@dorisgozbakes) Shredded Cheese Cake ($6.80 per slice) featuring an incredibly soft and airy pandan sponge cake covered with a generous layer of shredded cheese; the Milo Swiss Roll ($5.80 per slice) a delicate Milo sponge cake is piped with ribbons of Milo tiramisu cream and decorated with cubes of Milo sweets.
