Launched in December 2021 by Far East Organization, Baker X aims to support home-based bakers by providing them with an opportunity to have first-hand experience running a brick-and-mortar storefront and interacting with customers face-to-face with a fully fitted baking studio and a 10-seater café.
Patrons can dine in or takeaway the baked goods at the café on Level 4 of Orchard Central (opposite Genki Sushi). The café is operated in tandem with social enterprise, Foreword Coffee Roasters.
There will be a line-up of bakers throughout the year, and each baker will be in residence for between 2 to 6 weeks.
Joo Bakes showcases old-school classics such as the OG Butter Cake ($5 per slice, $33 per loaf), elevated with the use of French Butter to achieve a lighter, fluffy crumb without compromising on the cake’s rich butteriness.
Relish this signature bake in fruity variations of Orange ($5.50 per slice, $36 per loaf) and Lemon Drizzle ($6 per slice, $38 per loaf), made with fresh fruits in a good balance of sweetness and tartness.
Look out for the new Coffee Walnut ($5.50 per slice, $36 per loaf), an aromatic cake studded with bits of walnut, as well as the delectable Marble ($5.50 per slice, $36 per loaf) cake, popular for its combination of original butter and chocolatey goodness.

About Joo Bakes Founder & Baker Pang Joo Soon (Joo)
Pang Joo Soon (Joo), founder and baker of Joo Bakes (@joobakes), started his home bakery in early 2021. His earliest encounter with baking was as a child when he helped his father bake his homemade Hainanese butter cake. Growing up, he loved the cake so much, and with the realisation that his father was getting older, he thought of learning this well-loved recipe so family and friends could continue to enjoy it.
In 2018, he took a break from his corporate job and enrolled in pastry school in Paris and Thailand. During his culinary pursuits, he was introduced to French butter, which has since inspired his baking philosophy of using only quality and fresh ingredients for all his bakes today.
