What is happening?
October is looking to be a great month to swing by Singapore Zoo and Jurong Bird Park with your little ones.
Aside from being able to see the wild furry creatures and colorful feathery friends, you can join in the parks’ efforts to fight the deadliest monster, plastic. Did you know that every year over a million animals are killed by plastic, either by getting entangled in the debris or by consuming them?
As part of ongoing efforts to conserve biodiversity, this month Singapore Zoo and Jurong Bird Park seek to educate their visitors on the harmful impacts of plastic pollution on our aquatic life and encourage them to join in their efforts to protect wildlife.
The parks, in collaboration with Ernest Goh, a local artist from Ayer Ayer Project, will be featuring Shore Debris Table, an interactive art installation. Visitors can sift through the debris table, filled with real sand collected from Singapore’s beaches, to pick up microplastic pieces. Using the plastic pieces, you can create a craftwork, which you can use to spread awareness of plastic pollution by gifting it to someone.
At Recycle Racers, you have to race with your family to sort common household trash into the right bins and save wildlife, which is a great way to learn the best recycling habits, and to start cultivating the habit in little ones.
Ippy the Scarlet Macaw at Jurong Bird Park’s High Flyers Show and Pedro the Sea Lion at Singapore Zoo’s Splash Safari Show will also be joining in the fight!
In addition to it, kids of local residents get to enjoy free entry to the parks for the whole month. Just another reason to visit the parks.
