Growing up, we’ve always loved a game of airplane chess. So now, imagine our delight when we found out that we could play a life-sized version! Indeed, there’s an entire neighbourhood in Tampines North that’s themed after the nostalgic game, and we can’t get enough.

Airplane Chess Brought to Life

The pièce de résistance can be found between Blocks 480 and 484, where a giant playing board awaits. Gather your opponents for a game, or simply enjoy watching people from all walks of life walk or cycle across it. Kids will enjoy hopping from circle to circle as well — anything goes!

But that's not all! There, you’ll also find two of these vibrant murals. We simply cannot get enough of how gorgeous are the design and bright colours!

In fact, the entire neighbourhood is dressed to impress, and aligns with the theme closely. We loved wandering around the whole area, and spotting blocks with the vibrant airplane motifs.

Definitely get your smartphone cameras ready, you’ll need them!

Don’t leave without taking a photo at these murals. Located at Blocks 474 and 472, these murals have chairs and benches that ‘extend’ the scene into real life. Spot the living room scenes from various "households". Just how creative is this huh?

Bonus: there’s even a fun playground for the little ones to have some fun at. Photos plus play time all rolled into one!

What to Bring

The entire airplane chess board is exposed to the elements, which means it can get extremely hot! So we definitely recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen and lots of water too.

And if you intend to have a game of Aeroplane Chess on the board, you will need to bring enough people to be "chess pieces" too!

Our Experience

Overall, we truly enjoyed how unique this neighbourhood looked and have had fun exploring the space. It was really useful that after exploring, we could refuel at one of the coffeeshops, or pick up some daily necessities from the nearby shops.

Location

If you’re arriving by car, head to the carpark at Block 472 Tampines North. Otherwise, it’s a 10-minute walk from Tampines East MRT station.
