Google has teamed up with Pokémon to bring a delightful surprise to families: a fun and engaging Pokémon catching game right within the Google mobile app! This easter egg allows parents to relive their childhoods and introduce their little ones to the magic of the original 151 Pokémon from the Kanto region.

It should be noted that this game is only playable via mobile browser and not on desktop.

Google and Pokémon: A Nostalgic Surprise for Families

Get ready for a delightful surprise that blends the digital world with a touch of nostalgic fun! Google has recently collaborated with Pokémon to introduce an engaging and interactive Pokémon catching game, seamlessly integrated within the Google mobile app.

This exciting easter egg presents a wonderful opportunity for parents to not only revisit the beloved characters of their own childhood but also to introduce the enchanting world of the original 151 Pokémon from the Kanto region to their children.

Embarking on a Mobile Pokémon Adventure

The Pokémon catching experience is exclusively available through the Google mobile app, ensuring that the adventure is always within reach on any Android or iPhone device. This clever integration transforms the familiar interface of the Google app into a virtual Pokédex, ready to be filled with captured Pokémon.

How to play the Google Pokémon catching game

Getting started on this Pokémon quest is remarkably easy. After simply logging into their personal Google account via the mobile app (so that your progress can be tracked), all that’s required is to use the search bar to look up the names of the various Pokémon that hail from the classic Kanto region.

Once a Pokémon is found through the search, a Poké Ball icon will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of the device’s screen. A simple tap on this iconic symbol will trigger a short animation, depicting the successful capture of the desired Pokémon. With each successful catch, the Pokémon is added to the user's growing collection within the app.

Catching Legendary and Mythical Pokémons

For those aiming to truly "catch 'em all," there's an extra layer of excitement in acquiring the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, and the elusive Mew.

These special Pokémon require the use of Master Balls, which are not found through simple searches. Instead, Master Balls are earned as players demonstrate their Pokémon catching prowess by successfully capturing a certain number of other Pokémon in the Pokédex.

You’ll unlock Master Balls as you catch more Pokémon. You’ll get one Master Ball after you catch five, 20, 50, 100, and 150 Pokémon. While you will be prompted with specific Legendary or Mythical Pokémon after reaching these tiers, you don't need to catch them in order.

  • Five Pokémon: Articuno
  • 20 Pokémon: Zapdos
  • 50 Pokémon: Moltres
  • 100 Pokémon: Mewtwo
  • 150 Pokémon: Mew

This adds a rewarding progression system to the game.

Tracking Your Pokémon Journey

The Google app thoughtfully keeps a record of every Pokémon that has been successfully caught. This built-in tracking system acts as a virtual Pokédex, allowing families to monitor their progress and encouraging them to strive towards completing the entire collection of 151 original Pokémon.

While Google will prompt you after each successful capture by showing you a silhouette with a hint about another Pokémon you have yet to catch, similar to a “Who’s that Pokémon?” segment from the show, you don't need to catch the Pokémon in any order.

Things to Note:

  • The game is only playable on the Google mobile app. It will not work on desktop.
  • Users need to be logged into their Google account to play.
  • For some Pokémon, like Ditto, users may need to search "[Pokémon name] Pokémon" to ensure the game recognises the search.

This Google Pokémon game offers a fantastic opportunity for young parents to bond with their children over a shared love for these iconic characters. It's a chance to revisit cherished memories and create new ones as they embark on a digital Pokémon hunt together. So, gather the family, open the Google mobile app, and get ready to catch 'em all!
