Running from 1 to 23 November 2025 and timed to coincide with World Sea Jelly Day on 3 November 2025, the three-week long spotlight series invites visitors to discover the beauty and ecological importance of one of the ocean’s most ancient species, while reframing perceptions of sea jellies as vital guardians of the ocean.

Exclusive Guided Session To Learn About Sea Jelly Care, Breeding & Conservation

The specially curated Animal Spotlight: Sea Jellies programme offers guests a 45-minute guided journey through the support areas. Participants will observe husbandry practices, witness a feeding session and gain insights into in-house breeding and conservation efforts that sustain a wide variety of species.

Running four times daily throughout the three weeks, the programme provides direct engagement with Singapore Oceanarium’s educators, making for an informative and engaging encounter.

Expert Sharing Session with Professor Hiroshi Miyake

Among the programme highlights is an Expert Sharing Session by Professor Hiroshi Miyake, Professor at Kitasato University, held on 1 November 2025 at the Singapore Oceanarium’s Research and Learning Centre. The session titled Collaborative Rearing Research on Sea Jellies and Deep-Sea Animals with Aquariums, will offer fascinating insights into how scientists study and care for these animals.

Professor Miyake will share how aquariums and oceanariums globally work closely to study these animals’ life cycles and the important roles they play in ocean ecosystems, to advance marine science. Before the Expert Sharing Session, guests can also participate in a workshop titled Exploring Sea Jelly Diversity: Hands-on Workshop in Plankton Sampling and Identification, held at the Research and Learning Centre’s Marine Lab. Participants will get a close-up look at the tiny plankton collected from our local waters, and learn how to sort and identify different sea jelly species under the microscope. The session introduces simple techniques used by scientists to study marine life, while deepening understanding of the rich biodiversity that thrives in our seas.
