The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) and National Arts Council (NAC) invite you to be part of the inaugural Chinese Opera Festival 2025 and experience the rich stories, vibrant costumes, and captivating music of Chinese opera. This is your chance to experience it all right here in Singapore!
Five Local Chinese Operas in Five Weekends
Taking place over five weekends from 21 June to 26 July 2025, the festival will feature five local Chinese opera troupes, each performing on a select Saturday in a different dialect. They are Chinese Opera Studio (Teochew), Chinese Opera Ensemble (Hainanese), OperaWorks (Singapore) (Cantonese), Tian Yun Beijing Opera Society (Peking), and Tang Renaissance (Yue), active troupes dedicated to keeping Singapore’s local Chinese Opera landscape alive.
By bringing quality performances to more audiences, this collaboration between SCCC and NAC is a significant one that strives for audiences from all walks of life to celebrate the diversity of Chinese opera in Singapore.
They will make sure that it’s for everyone to enjoy! You don’t have to worry about the dialect as each performance is accompanied by bilingual surtitles, so you can easily follow the story and appreciate the artistry.
Join the Fringe Activities
To truly immerse yourself in the world of Chinese opera, don’t miss the fringe activities happening alongside the performances such as:
Interactive Chinese opera movement workshops: perfect for all ages and a fun way to try out opera movements for yourself.
Talks by master artists: gain insights from leading experts like Cultural Medallion recipient Joanna Wong and Stewards of Intangible Cultural Heritage Award recipient Cai Bixia. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the art form and maybe even a new passion!
Besides the workshops, you can also step into the Chinese Opera Roving Exhibition. It’s a free up-close-and-personal experience with Singapore’s traditional street opera. Featuring three antique Chinese chests – known as 多宝盒, each chest will unfold and reveal information about a different aspect of the art form: the rich history of Chinese opera in Singapore, an inside look at how a traditional street opera stage is constructed, and even samples of tactile materials used in stage-building.
Happening now till 26 July at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Level 7 Foyer, the exhibition will be formed in English.
