A First-of-Its-Kind Mandarin-Led Festival for Kids

Making its debut this June school holidays, Cultural Playground 2026 is the first children’s festival by the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC). Designed for children below 12, the festival blends theatre, music, storytelling, and interactive play to create meaningful and engaging ways for kids to experience local Chinese culture—primarily through Mandarin.

With 16 programmes packed into three days, families can expect a vibrant mix of performances, workshops, and hands-on activities suitable for different age groups.

Must-Watch Highlight: The Legend of Nezha Puppetry Performance

One of the festival’s biggest highlights is The Legend of Nezha by Paper Monkey Theatre. This visually captivating performance brings the legendary Chinese tale to life using intricately crafted rod puppets.

Expect more than just puppetry—this multi-disciplinary show also features:

  • A lively dragon dance segment
  • Live martial arts performance
  • Original music by The Flame of the Forest and Govin Tan

Children can also deepen their experience with a complementary hands-on workshop, where they’ll learn traditional rod puppetry techniques and try animating their own handcrafted puppets.

Reimagined Mandarin Classics Through Theatre

Another standout is the latest edition of The Nursery Rhymes Project by The Theatre Practice.

Titled “Imagine Our Songs”, this interactive performance reinterprets familiar Mandarin nursery rhymes like Xiao Bai Chuan《小白船》and Mothers Are Best《世上只有妈妈好》 through music and storytelling—making them fresh, engaging, and relatable for young audiences.

Multi-Sensory Music Workshops for Babies

Even the littlest ones are included. Babies and toddlers (0–18 months) can participate in specially designed music workshops inspired by Xiao Bai Chuan《小白船》.

Grounded in SonicPlay™, these sessions focus on:

  • Listening as a foundation for learning
  • Sound as a way to connect and communicate
  • Early cultural exposure through music

It’s a gentle, sensory-rich introduction to language and culture for infants.

Parent-Child Workshops for Meaningful Bonding

Families can also take part in interactive workshops that blend culture, creativity, and connection:

  • Storytelling with Food-Making: Explore family traditions through stories, simple food-making, and games
  • Picture Book Storytelling: Discover elements of local Chinese culture through movement, stories, and traditional play

These sessions are designed to make language learning natural and fun through shared experiences.

Support for Parents: Free Workshops

Recognising the role parents play in language learning, the festival also includes two free workshops led by a curriculum specialist.

Parents will gain practical tips on how to:

  • Integrate Mandarin into everyday routines
  • Make language learning engaging and meaningful at home

Free Storytelling & Fringe Activities

Beyond ticketed programmes, families can also enjoy:

  • Free storytelling sessions on Chingay traditions (in collaboration with the People’s Association)
  • Fringe activities like face-painting

These add to the festival’s lively, drop-in friendly atmosphere—perfect for a full day out.
