Beyond rest and recovery, confinement services now offer so much more to support you as a new mom. Let’s dive in to see what’s out there for you!

Whether you are preparing for this new chapter or considering new options for your next baby, we know how exciting and exhausting it can be. In the past, confinement for moms may be perceived as a period of recuperation and recovery. Now, the suite of meticulously curated services goes beyond just that.

Check out the guide we put together to make your process a little smoother!

Confinement Services 101

Traditionally, confinement referred to an indoor recovery period for mothers, usually lasting 28 to 40 days after childbirth. In this age, the purpose has been extended beyond that essential rest for mothers, to include holistic aspects such as nutrition, baby care, and even emotional and mental wellness.

Benefits of confinement include postpartum recovery for moms to regain strength after labour, supporting newborn care with feeding, bathing, soothing and sleep routines, as well as nutrition guidance with specially prepared meals to boost recovery and for breastfeeding moms, milk supply.

There is also increasingly more attention given to emotional and mental wellbeing of parents, especially to ease them into the next phase of self care back home.

There are two main categories of services commonly used in Singapore, namely home-based nannies and - increasingly popular - confinement centres. The former has experienced caregivers who may move in temporarily with the family or visit daily to provide support in the comfort of home, while the latter are dedicated facilities where both mom and baby stay for a period of time, attended to round-the-clock by staff.

Factors to Consider When Choosing What Works Best for Your Family

Qualifications and Experience

Regardless of your choice being a home-based nanny or a confinement centre garnering the expertise of nurses and consultants, do check up the qualifications and experience of who will be supporting you through this crucial period. Legitimate sources of these caregivers should be able to whip up their professional credentials easily and upon request.

Customer Reviews

We know the power of word of mouth, and what better source of info than other families who have experienced the service and support? Here is your chance to exercise discretion and your own judgement, extracting relevant and useful information on what actually matters to you, including personal or little touches, going the extra mile, or even what to expect.

Prior Meetup or Guided Visit

Before welcoming a stranger into your home to be involved in rather intimate care, a face-to-face meeting and conversation sound like the logical thing to do. You can even ask for deets or a demo on how the confinement nanny usually carry out her tasks. Guided tours of confinement centres and meeting the caregiving team serve the same purpose. Get a firsthand vibe, even before you decide.

Costs and Subsidies

Established caregivers and confinement centres will be able to provide detailed and itemised cost estimates for your deliberation. But do also enquire about possible hidden costs, optional items and other add-on costs. Additionally, ask about subsidies that may come in handy to help cover some of your costs – while these may not be direct offsets, it could be applicable to work permits, insurance or training for foreign confinement nannies that may be handled by agencies.
