Planning a trip to Hong Kong with the little ones can feel like a whirlwind, but with the right strategy, it is an absolute blast. Whether you are looking for high-energy theme parks or educational museum visits, Hong Kong offers a unique blend of nostalgia and modern play. We’ve broken down Mummy Ruby's (@familystaysg) tried-and-tested 6-day itinerary that balances iconic sights with practical parent tips to keep the stress low and the fun high.

6-Day Hong Kong Family Itinerary At-A-Glance

This strategic route balances high-octane fun with local culture, designed to keep travel times short and engagement high:

  • Day 1: Harbour & Stars – Arrive via a midnight flight to hit the ground running or arrive a day earlier for a well-rested start. Explore the Hong Kong Space Museum, take a scenic Star Ferry ride, and catch the harbour views from the Hong Kong Observation Wheel.

  • Day 2: Tech & City Lights – Spend the morning shopping at Kai Tak Mall, followed by a 3-hour session of AR/VR gaming at Joypolis Sports. End the night on the CityBus H3 for a dazzling open-top sunset tour of the city.

  • Day 3: Ocean Park Adventures – A full day dedicated to Ocean Park. Pro-tip: Book Neptune’s Restaurant for dinner to eat alongside sea creatures, then head back to Wan Chai for late-night dim sum at Dragonking.

  • Day 4: Mountains & Monks – Take the Ngong Ping 360 Crystal Cabin (priority boarding is a must!) to visit the Big Buddha. Refuel at Chrisly Cafe in the village before exploring the cultural sites.

  • Day 5: Animals & Outlets – Visit the underrated Noah’s Ark for 4D shows and animal exhibits, then head to Citygate Outlets for some serious retail therapy and a Michelin-level "Zi Char" dinner at Savor Kingdom.

  • Day 6: Pastries & Souvenirs – Grab a final box of Bakehouse egg tarts before heading to the airport early. Use the extra time to sweep the Disney and Sanrio stores at the terminal before your flight home.

So without further ado, let's kick off the Hong Kong adventure and get the full details below!

Travel & Accommodation: The Strategic Start

To make the most of your trip, timing is everything.

  • The Flight Strategy: Taking a late-night flight (like the Cathay Pacific CX636 departing at 8:15 pm) allows you to arrive at midnight, get the kids tucked into bed, and wake up ready for a full "Day 1" of exploring.

  • Where to Stay: Dorsett Wan Chai is a fantastic family pick. It’s centrally located and sits right opposite the Hong Kong Jockey Club. If you choose the room with Course View, you can actually watch the horse races at night for free!

  • Getting Around: While the hotel is walkable to Wan Chai, we recommend using taxi when travelling with kids. The door-to-door convenience is a lifesaver for tired little legs.

Active Play & Theme Parks

Hong Kong is famous for its world-class attractions, and these three are non-negotiable for families:

  • Ocean Park Hong Kong: A must-visit. Arrive early to beat the crowds for the rides and stay until sunset for incredible scenic views. For a magical meal, book a table at Neptune’s Restaurant to dine right next to a massive floor-to-ceiling aquarium.

  • Joypolis Sports (Kai Tak Mall): This 4-storey complex is packed with AR and VR games inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog. It operates in 3-hour blocks, so booking on Klook is essential.

  • Noah’s Ark (Ma Wan): A great "quieter" option. It features indoor animal exhibits and 4D shows. It's much less crowded than the major parks, making it a more relaxed afternoon for younger children.

Culture & Incredible Views

You haven't truly seen Hong Kong until you've viewed it from the water and the sky.

  • Ngong Ping 360: Head to Tung Chung MTR Station (Exit B). Here's a BYKidO Pro-Tip, book the Crystal or Crystal+ Cabin. You get priority boarding (saving huge queue times) and the glass floor offers a breathtaking 20-minute view. Once at the top, explore the Ngong Ping Village and the Big Buddha.

  • The Harbour Trio: Combine the Star Ferry, the Hong Kong Space Museum (check show timings beforehand!), and the Hong Kong Observation Wheel. The wheel often features pop-up fairs and events at the base.

  • The Sunset Bus: For a budget-friendly alternative to the "Big Bus" tours, hop on the CityBus H3 (Sunset Bus) from Central. It’s a fantastic way to see the city lights and the harbour at dusk without the premium price tag.

The Foodie Guide: Cha Chaan Tengs & Dim Sum

You can’t visit Hong Kong without indulging in the local cafe culture.

  • The Classics: Visit Australia Dairy Company (aim for weekday noon to avoid the longest queues) for their famous scrambled eggs and toast. If you’re still hungry, Hang Heung Bakery Cafe next door offers heartier noodle and rice options.

  • The Pastry King: You must visit Bakehouse. Their sourdough egg tarts are legendary. It is always crowded, so be prepared to queue or grab a box to go.

  • Nostalgic Vibes: For a unique dinner, try Lau Haa Hotpot in Causeway Bay. It has a cool, underground neon vibe that feels like stepping back into old Hong Kong. This is one of the most unique hotpot offerings with more than 20 hotpot bases and a range of unique and rare local offerings – we recommend the Fish Maw Chicken Pot that is super rich, creamy and comforting!

BYKidO Pro-Tip: If you are heading to Joypolis Sports, remember to pack grip socks for the kids! Like most indoor play areas in Hong Kong, they are mandatory for safety, and buying them on-site is an extra expense you can easily avoid.

More Essential Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: November to January is cool and pleasant. If visiting in Spring/Summer, bring plenty of insect repellent and sunblock for Ocean Park.

  • Currency/Payments: Ensure you have an Octopus Card or your digital wallet set up, though cash is still king in some older tea houses or cha chaan tengs.

  • Essential Apps: Klook (for Ngong Ping and Joypolis tickets) and Octopus App for Tourist (purchase or link your physical Octopus card).

  • Airport Prep: Leave extra time on your final day. Hong Kong International Airport has fantastic Disney and Sanrio merch stores, plus a massive food court (after customs) featuring roast goose and dim sum for one last local feast.
