Celebrate the beauty, relevance, and enduring spirit of Bahasa Melayu from 30 August to 11 October 2025 through a season of performances, workshops, and shared cultural experiences

Celebrate the fun and spirit of Bulan Bahasa at Wisma Geylang Serai (WGS) from 30 August to 11 October 2025! This year’s theme, ‘Pesona Bahasa, Warisan Budaya’, is a celebration of the allure, relevance, and enduring spirit of the Malay language.”

Look forward to indulging in performances, workshops, exhibitions, and interactive experiences that honour heritage while embracing new creative expressions!

Join the Opening Celebration: Warna Warisan Kita

Date: Saturday, 30 August 2025  | 12:00pm – 6:00pm
Venue: Persada Budaya, Wisma Geylang Serai

The celebrations open with Warna Warisan Kita, an immersive afternoon that transforms Wisma Geylang Serai into a living showcase of music, dance, craft, and community spirit. From the rhythmic beats of the kompang to the intricate artistry of batik, every corner will offer an opportunity to experience the depth and diversity of Malay culture.

Families can look forward to lively stage performances, interactive booths with heritage games and language activities, and hands-on crafts like batik fan painting, kuih keychain making, and basket weaving—bringing Malay traditions to life in fun and engaging ways.

Here are list of booths activities that families can join:

PA Integration (MESRA) 

Test your skills and have fun with classic and interactive games at the booth—from the word-building challenge of Sahibba to memory-matching, a spin on the Vocabulary Challenge Wheel, and even a “Complete the Lyrics” game featuring beloved Malay traditional songs.

National Library Board (NLB)

Celebrate Malay Folktales with the National Library Board’s showcase of books and resources on Malay language, culture, arts, and history. Families can also enjoy fun activities like online games, story-making cards, and quiz sheets that bring timeless tales and local personalities to life.

Orkestra Melayu Singapura (OMS)

Discover the vibrant rhythms of Malay heritage and culture. Explore traditional instruments such as the gamelan and try your hand at basic rhythms and learn musical terms and genres in Malay.

Discover the beauty of Malay music with a hands-on gamelan experience! Try playing simple melodies on the Gamelan Saron or its app, guided by an OMS facilitator. Explore slideshows and videos of traditional instruments, learn about different Malay music genres and their cultural context, with content available in both Malay and English for everyone to enjoy.

Bulan Bahasa Workshop Series: Bengkel Cerita Kita

Date: Saturdays, 6, 13, 20 September 2025
Venue: Project Studios, Wisma Geylang Serai

The Bengkel Cerita Kita series will offer participants the chance to engage directly with different aspects of Malay culture through a variety of workshops:

  • Bengkel Tulisan Jawi (6 September) – Led by calligrapher Hazrin Mohamad, this session introduces participants to the traditional Jawi script and its relevance in contemporary artistic expression.

  • Dunia Sarung Ajaib (13 September) – A participatory theatre workshop for children that uses storytelling and performance to explore the cultural significance of the sarung.

  • Ayuh! Silat! (20 September) – A parent-child workshop that introduces Silat as both a martial art and a cultural tradition, fostering intergenerational learning and connection.

Each workshop is designed to be accessible while deepening understanding of the role language and tradition play in shaping identity.

A Living Tapestry of Language and Heritage

Beyond its flagship events, Pesona Bahasa, Warisan Budaya will fill WGS with exhibitions, cultural demonstrations, and family-friendly activities designed to bring people of all ages closer to the Malay language throughout the period. Each programme is an opportunity to connect with the past, engage with the present, and imagine how our heritage will live on in the future.

Bulan Bahasa at Wisma Geylang Serai is an ongoing journey to keep the Malay language alive, relevant, and deeply cherished for generations to come. All activities are free and open to the public unless otherwise stated.
