Chinatown comes alive this May with nostalgic games, lion dances, and hands-on heritage workshops at the Five Footway Festival.

Venue: Smith Street and Pagoda Street, Chinatown Singapore.
Dates: 2 - 10 May 2026
Admission: Free admission with paid workshops

Transport your family to the bustling streets of old Singapore at the Five Footway Festival 2026. Running from 2 to 10 May, this heritage celebration transforms Smith Street and Pagoda Street into a living museum. It is a fantastic Educational and Cultural day out, where kids can ditch the screens to discover how their grandparents played, ate, and lived.

The festival focuses on the "five-foot ways"—the iconic covered walkways of Chinatown’s shophouses—bringing back the sights, sounds, and smells of a bygone era through immersive street programming.

High-Energy Stage Performances

The streets will be filled with the sounds of gongs and music with over 32 stage events scheduled across the two festival weekends.

  • Lion & Dragon Dances: Catch spectacular opening acts by renowned troupes like Chin Woo, Hok San, and Tian Eng throughout the day at both Smith Street and Pagoda Street.

  • Traditional Arts: Watch the mesmerising Face Changing performances, martial arts showcases, and traditional Chinese Opera by the Chinese Circle Theatre and Tung On Wui Kun.

  • Unique Spectacles: Don't miss the Puppet Performance by Sin Hoe Ping, the Chinese Circus Show by Circus in Motion, or the high-action Cudgel Performance.

  • Live Music & Poetry: Enjoy Chinese Orchestra performances by Jessica Music School, traditional poetry recitals by the Xin Sheng Poets Society, and a unique "Chinatown Storytelling" musical by Reverberance.

Hands-On Workshops & Heritage Talks

For families who love to create, there are several ticketed workshops that offer a deep dive into Chinese traditions.

  • Culinary Fun: Learn the art of traditional Wife Pastry (è€ć©†é„Œ) making—a sweet treat with a rich history.

  • Creative Crafts: Try your hand at a DIY Traditional Handbag workshop where you can make your own vintage-style floral "kiss-lock" bag.

  • Culture & History: Join an Opera Workshop on the Smith Street stage to learn about the costumes and movements, or listen to "Chinatown Musings" for little-known facts and forgotten legends about the district.

  • Tea Appreciation: Discover the meditative art of tea at Tang Tea, perfect for a calm break during the festivities.

Free Nostalgic Games & Experiences

Relive the "kampung spirit" with 16 free experiences designed for all ages to enjoy together.

  • Old-School Game Booths: Introduce the kids to Five Stones, Pick-up Sticks, Glass Marbles, and Paper Flipping. These simple games were the highlight of childhood for many Singaporeans in the past.

  • Cultural Immersion: Get a makeover at the Beijing Opera Makeup booth, try your hand at Traditional Paper Cutting, or watch a Calligraphy master at work.

  • Living Heritage: Encounter traditional street characters like the "Letter Writer," who helped early immigrants communicate with their families back home.

  • Handmade Treats & Crafts: Browse local retail stalls featuring handmade crafts by Yong En Care and don't miss the Grandpa Durian stall for a classic local treat.

BYKidO Pro-Tip: Most of the active programming and free game booths happen during the weekends (2–3 May and 9–10 May) from 1pm to 6 pm. If you want to catch the big performances, aim to be at the Smith Street stage by early afternoon to snag a good viewing spot! Also, keep an eye out for the Lion Dance which performs at Smith Street and Pagoda Street.
