This August, A Date with Tradition 2026 invites families to do that by bringing traditional arts to life through performances, installations, drop-in activities and hands-on workshops at Stamford Arts Centre.

Taking place from 21 August to 5 September 2026, this year’s edition is themed Myths and Legends, bringing stories and traditions from different communities to life in new and engaging ways. Best of all, there are plenty of activities where you and the kids can get creative, make something together and experience traditional arts up close.

What to Expect at A Date with Tradition 2026

Taking place within the wider Bras Basah and Bugis precinct, A Date with Tradition 2026 lets you experience traditional arts in fun and engaging ways. From Chinese opera and Indian classical dance to gamelan storytelling, interactive installations, youth-led hangouts and hands-on activities, there are plenty of opportunities for you to discover different cultural traditions.

For families, it’s a chance to help little ones deepen their understanding of different cultural traditions while uncovering the shared stories, values and experiences that connect Singapore’s communities. Designed to be open and welcoming, the festival offers mostly free programmes alongside selected ticketed workshops that encourage you to get involved.

By making traditional arts more approachable and participatory, A Date with Tradition 2026 gives younger audiences and first-time visitors the opportunity to explore cultural practices they may not otherwise encounter.

Watch, Create & Discover Traditional Arts

A Date with Tradition 2026 gives you plenty of ways to experience traditional arts beyond simply watching a performance. As artists reinterpret traditional art forms through performances, workshops and participatory experiences, you can get a closer look at the stories, skills and cultural practices behind them.

For a fun introduction to Chinese opera, check out Breaking the Opera Walls by Traditional Arts Centre. Instead of staying on stage, performers dressed in traditional Chinese opera costumes move through different corners of Stamford Arts Centre, bringing classic characters closer to the audience.

You can also watch Teochew opera demonstrations and performances by Chinese Opera Studio, where you’ll get a glimpse into the art form’s vocal techniques, makeup, costumes and performance traditions.

For something different, introduce the kids to Indian classical dance through Journey to the West, which gives the well-known Chinese tale with a Kathakali twist. You can also catch Panchatantra, an interactive Bharatanatyam performance where the audience gets to help shape how the story unfolds.

Workshops and Hands-on Activities to Join

Other than performances, families can also engage in various range of workshops and hands-on activities, such as:

• Make an illuminated origami lamp: with the Japanese Cultural Society and take your creation home as a keepsake. There’s also a dedicated parent-child session on 5 September.
• Try your hand at craft-making: through Chokmah’s workshops, where you can make items such as acrylic coasters, marble mini pots, rainbow prism bears and Peranakan-inspired terrazzo coasters.
• Paint a portrait: at U+ Gallery’s Hats Off to These Legends! session, where you can paint your art partner wearing a hat inspired by a legendary or mythical figure.
• Explore Chinese opera through movement: at the Horse-Whip Workshop, where you’ll learn how the prop symbolises riding a horse and try basic movements and storytelling techniques.

With so many opportunities to watch, make and participate, you can turn your visit into more than just a day of performances. It’s a chance for the whole family to discover the stories and traditions behind Singapore’s multicultural heritage together.

Create a Community Mural

Let the little ones get creative by contributing to a community mural at Stamford Arts Centre. Pick up a brush and add your own touch to the collective artwork created by festivalgoers throughout the festival.

Try Your Hand at Batik Painting

Introduce the family to the traditional art of batik through a hands-on painting experience. You’ll learn basic batik techniques while exploring storytelling, collaboration and cultural appreciation as you create a collaborative artwork together.

Bring a Garden to Life

Head to Where the Wildflowers Grow: Rooted, an interactive installation by Kester Wong and Tan Shao Qi. Touch the flowers to make them glow and sway, gradually transforming the garden into a living, responsive landscape as more visitors interact with it.

Hang Out and Get Creative with Kita

Don’t forget to drop by Open Space @ [X] by Kita, a relaxed space where you can meet new people or create art using the provided materials. There are also evening hangouts featuring activities such as a SingLit poetry circle, music open jam and abstract arts jam.
