How Children Learn Through Real-World Community Action

Examples of Real World Community Action: (Top) Families taking part in a multi-generational stretching exercise, (Bottom) Preschoolers and their families after a beach clean-up activity.
Rather than relying purely on classroom lessons, Little Footprints Preschool empowers children to learn through hands-on, experiential community projects held throughout the year. These initiatives connect classroom concepts directly to real people, real places, and real community needs across four key pillars:
1. Intergenerational Engagement
Building meaningful bonds across generations helps children foster deep respect and empathy for seniors. Through visits and joint activities with community partners such as TOUCH Community Services and NTUC Health, children interact with elderly residents by:
- Joining in light stretching exercises, cheerful sing-alongs, and storytelling sessions.
-
Crafting dementia-friendly cognitive activities and games designed to engage and brighten the day for seniors.
2. Food Security
To develop a sense of gratitude and care for others, children explore the concept of food sustainability and community giving. Working alongside partners like Food From The Heart, centres participate in:
- Collecting food items for community food drives.
- Assembling practical care hampers.
-
Attending talks hosted at their centres on food sustainability.
3. Environmental Sustainability
Eco-conscious habits start early. Children actively participate in practical, green initiatives that protect neighbourhood environments:
- Playing sorting games to learn proper recycling practices.
- Giving everyday materials new life by crafting functional items and tote bags in hands-on upcycling workshops.
-
Participating in supervised neighbourhood litter-picking walks to keep local surroundings clean.
4. Kindness & Community
Promoting emotional well-being and civic appreciation, children are encouraged to share positivity within their local neighbourhoods:
- Hosting book donation drives to supply children's homes with reading materials.
- Preparing thank-you cards for community helpers.
-
Designing and creating kindness posters to remind themselves and others to be kind to others every day.
Babilou Cares 2026: A Centre-wide Day of Giving

Some highlights from one of the Babilou Cares 2026 events
A signature highlight illustrating this year-round philosophy is Babilou Cares, an annual initiative across all Babilou Family centres.
On 17 July 2026, all 47 Little Footprints Preschool centres across Singapore mobilised simultaneously for a coordinated day of community outreach. Educators, young children, and parents joined hands with local community partners to give back. This yearās effort focused on active participation and tangible contributionsāfrom assembling care packs and distributing essential items to gathering book and toy donations for distribution to local beneficiaries.
This annual initiative builds upon a long-standing tradition of giving back, following previous success in raising funds for local environmental causes with Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) in 2025 and international children's relief efforts through World Vision in 2024.
