Visitors to the Indian Heritage Centre on 17 and 18 April 2021 will enjoy free admission, together with hands-on craft activities and cooking demonstrations to celebrate the Indian New Year.

Celebrate the Indian New Year this weekend at the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) and participate in an array of activities to get into the festive spirit! The Indian New Year is observed by various Indian sub-ethnic communities in Singapore. Tamil families celebrate Puthandu on the first day of the Tamil calendar month of Chithirai, which fell on 14 April this year; the Sikh community observes Vaisakhi, which was on 13 April for 2021; while the Malayalee, Telugu and Bengali communities observe Vishu, Ugadi and Pohela Baishakh respectively around this time of the year too.

Visitors to IHC on 17 and 18 April 2021 will enjoy free admission, together with hands-on craft activities and cooking demonstrations that showcase elements of intangible cultural heritage that are practised during these festivals. Come revel in the rich culture and traditions of Singapore’s Indian communities at IHC this weekend!

Special Drop-in Craft Activity – Thoranam Tying

Ever wanted to make your own thoranam? Making this hanging decoration is not as hard as you think! Try your hand at thoranam tying with a simple five-step process when you visit IHC on 17 April 2021.

Special Drop-in Craft Activity – Rangoli Tote Bag Printing

Date: 17 April 2021
Time: 10.00am – 5.00pm
Admission: Free

Rangoli art is commonly displayed on floors or tabletops during festive occasions as a sign of prosperity, but have you ever tried using it as a design element? Personalise a plain tote bag with a rangoli stencil at IHC on 17 April 2021!

Sikhs in Singapore – A Story Untold Special Exhibition

Date: 27 March to 30 September 2021
Admission: Free

Sikhs in Singapore – A Story Untold is IHC’s second community co-created exhibition, and it showcases the heritage and culture of the Sikh community in Singapore. The exhibition will offer insights into this small but prominent Singapore Indian community, from their history and culture, to their evolution and place in modern Singapore.

The first 100 visitors to the exhibition on 17 April 2021 will receive a free limited edition mask and Grab vouchers.

No Grind Thosai & Tomato Chutney Cooking Demonstration by MasterChef Contestant Vasunthara

Workshop size: 20 participants

“Thosai Consultant'' and MasterChef Season 2 contestant Vasunthara Ramasamy is a passionate home cook who enjoys reading about food history and exploring her culinary roots in Tamil Nadu. Catch her in action on 18 April 2021 at IHC as she reveals the secret of cooking no grind thosai and tomato chutney!

Phulkari Design Tiles Kids Workshop by Kumuda Krovidi

Date: 18 April 2021

Ages: 8 to 12 years old
Workshop size: 20 participants

Phulkari is a form of textile art originating from the Punjab region in India, and it involves embroidery with bright colours and floral designs. Kids can try their hand at creating traditional geometrical designs and motifs in this engaging introductory phulkari workshop at IHC on 18 April 2021!
