Workshops

Linocut Printmaking by Artefakts

Be introduced to the basics of linocut carving and printing techniques. Identify an ideal image for a linocut artwork by observing the positive and negative shapes. Preselected templates will be provided for this workshop. Participants will begin by tracing the selected design to transfer it onto a lino block surface. Then, with a linocut blade, participants will carve the lino block to create a positive relief image. Finally, ink the carved block using a brayer (or roller) with block printing ink, and print your design onto Japanese washi paper.

In this workshop, participants will learn:

  • Characteristics of an ideal linocut artwork, such as detail, pattern, texture, and proportion of positive/negative areas
  • How to transfer image onto lino block surface
  • Introduction to carving tools and blades and the various marks they make
  • Carving techniques; Safety Dos & Don’ts
  • Inking and Printing techniques

Participants to note:

1. Each print will require a drying time of about 30 mins. Participants are to return to the studio for self-collection of their prints.

2. To avoid confusion and ensure easy identification when collecting, participants are responsible to write their names clearly on their prints.

Calling all parents and young adventurers! Join us for a one-of-a-kind experience at Fermented Clothing, where families come together to explore the ancient art of natural indigo dyeing.

In this hands-on workshop, children and their parents will discover the magic of indigo dye derived from plants while creating their own unique masterpieces. Participants are encouraged to bring along a used t-shirt, weighing up to 120g, that has seen better days—stained, yellowed, or well-loved, it's all perfect for our workshop!

Led by experienced artisan, attendees will delve into the fascinating processes behind natural indigo dye production and learn how to transform their old t-shirts into vibrant works of art. From preparing the dye bath to mastering different dyeing techniques, participants will gain valuable insights into sustainable crafting practices and the beauty of upcycling.

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into a world of creativity as you experiment with various patterns and designs to adorn your salvaged t-shirt!

At the end of the workshop, each participant will proudly take home their personalised indigo-dyed t-shirt, infused with memories of a fun-filled day of creativity and exploration.

The Open Studios by artist-tenants are a cherished feature of the Goodman Open House. These Open Studios offer a rare glimpse into the intimate working spaces of the artists, revealing both vulnerability and empowerment. With over 66 artists and arts groups participating this year, there’s something for everyone.

The Observatory

Visitors can enjoy sonic immersion with The Observatory’s listening session, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds.

DPLMT

Visitors can enjoy 3D resin printing showcases to viral tufting sessions to craft unique rugs at DPLMT.

DPLMT x MINDS (Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore)

This year’s Goodman Open House also features a collaboration between Goodman Art Centre artist-tenant DPLMT and MINDS to create a vibrant graffiti wall mural. In the weeks leading up to the unveiling, individuals with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers have been working with passionate DPLMT artists to bring this mural to life.

Visitors will have the opportunity to contribute to the creative process by spray painting a feature wall mural at DPLMT’s Urban Art Jam. Furthermore, interactive installations, like Cloud Lantern by artist-tenant Leo Liu, encourage visitors to add personalised wishes to the artwork, symbolising collective aspirations. As night falls, the lantern illuminates, representing hope and joy.

Additionally, this year marks the beginning of a new partnership with the Mountbatten community. Goodman Art Centre’s Cultivate Central and Mountbatten’s Green Action for Communities will share knowledge at the Goodman Community Farm, fostering community engagement and environmental awareness.

Body Fit Training (BFT)

In an unexpected twist, BFT, a tenant of Singapore’s largest arts enclave, will also participate in this year’s Goodman Open House by bringing fitness to the arts. BFT aims to foster a sense of camaraderie and community, and they see this as an opportunity to engage with the arts community and visitors. They will extend their gym hours and offer a variety of drop-in fitness activities that are designed to be manageable and enjoyable.

[NEW!] Movie Night in the Garden

Visitors can look forward to an outdoor cinema experience at the amphitheatre, Movie Night in the Garden, introduced for the first time this year. As the sun sets, visitors can immerse in the evening atmosphere of Goodman Arts Centre as the arts enclave transforms into a place to chill, wind-down and socialise. The screening of the blockbuster film Barbie sets a wonderful backdrop for visitors to savour freshly grilled satay from the live barbeque stations, pick up an alcoholic beverage (or not!), and gather round to watch the film, catch-up with fellow artists or soak in the vibe.

Food & Drinks

To ensure that visitors are well-energised throughout the day, a wide variety of food and drinks will be made available at Goodman Arts Centre throughout the event. Food vendors will offer an array of options, while those feeling peckish can look out for traditional food stations serving local snacks like ice kacang and kacang puteh popping up at different timings throughout the day.
