ArCH Square: New Free-Entry Heritage Centre for Archaeology and Intangible Cultural Heritage

ArCH Square is Singapore’s first dedicated education and outreach centre for archaeology and Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), it’s a space dedicated as a key platform and enabler in the fields of archaeology and ICH, our living heritage. 

ArCH Square for Practitioners

Through close collaborations with ICH practitioners, heritage businesses, entrepreneurs and volunteers, ArCH Square deepens community involvement through hands-on learning, skill-building and collaborative opportunities. Its focus on these specific industries creates a focal point for practitioners to come together and seed collaborations, and utilise the space for knowledge transmission.

ArCH Square for Families 

From our experience, kids learn best when they can touch, see, and do. The problem with "heritage" is that it can often feel abstract—a dusty old photo or a story from a textbook.

ArCH Square aims to change that with a series of hands-on archaeology workshops to spark interest in Singapore’s past and enable more Singaporeans to play a part in our archaeological scene. For instance, HSG will begin Archaeology 101 in December, a flagship four-week course where participants can examine artefacts up close, learn to identify materials and motifs, and discover how archaeologists uncover history.

There will also be a variety of ICH programmes developed in collaboration with local practitioners.

Permanent Displays

ArCH Square will be showcasing real stone tools and pottery fragments discovered on Pulau Ubin that are believed to be over 3,000 years old. Alongside ancient artefacts, you'll see traditional hand-painted Hokkien lanterns by a local artisan.

Workshops and More

What we find promising is that ArCH Square is designed to be a "key platform and enabler." It’s a space for practitioners, artisans, and volunteers to gather. This means the programming will likely stay fresh.

For example, at the opening weekend (25 and 26 Oct), ArCH Square will be hosting Discover Archaeology! where families can touch and feel centuries-old finds from prior excavations, and dig deep into the stories each of them hold.
