A Guide to Postnatal Wellness for Moms & Babies

Share with other Parents or Go Back

After so many months of anticipation, the baby is finally here, only to welcome more sleepless nights and mood swings? Absolutely not necessarily the case for mommies!

As postnatal wellbeing become an increasing priority among savvy families in Singapore, we also see an evolving availability of postnatal wellness services. Think along the lines of traditional wisdom and scientifically-backed needs – what’s more, not only for mommies, but also focused on the newborns.

What postnatal care can do for moms

Boosts postpartum healing:

  • Diminishes water retention, muscle soreness and overall tension
  • Supports emotional balance through mindful relaxation and body regulation
  • Encourages bonding between mother and baby

What Kind of Postnatal Care to Expect

More commonly known are traditional Javanese or Ayurvedic confinement massages, as well as spa-style aromatherapy and hydrotherapy relaxation, targeted primarily at moms. We like how establishments started creating mom and baby experiences, or collaborate with professional partners to include components like lactation support, sensory and motor skill development, and even yoga.

For moms

  • Postnatal massages, for womb recovery and tension relief
  • Lactation and breast massages, for milk flow and stimulating lymphatic flow
  • Belly-binding, to get mommies back in shape
  • zentle facials and body scrubs with natural formulas
  • Yoga*

For babies

  • Infant massage, with techniques to aid digestion and sleep (moms can learn to do this as another avenue for baby bonding!)*
  • Hydro-spa, with physiological, psychological and developmental benefits (some establishments allow parents to join their kiddos in the water)*
  • Sensory and motor skill development classes*
  • Music and movement therapy sessions*

*Possible parent & baby involvement

How to Choose Postnatal Care

Before taking a look at our pocket list, here are some considerations you may want to have at the back of your mind:

  • Safety of environment and equipment used
  • Hygiene, including types of lotions or essential oils used
  • Credentials of therapists or specialists
  • Comfort and privacy of home-based services versus facilities and professional equipment at external venues
  • Personal budget and intended duration

Though this may be one of the newer establishments, their team of therapists have anything between four to 25 years of experience. BMB in short, this holistic maternity wellness brand has been working with mothers since 2009. Putting technology at the forefront of their treatments, we see some fanciful terms behind their postpartum recovery options (like Proionic Womb Wellness Therapy?). This is of course in addition to their pre and postnatal care, as well as baby massages.

No wonder she believes in harnessing the effectiveness of meridian massage (TCM Tuina) to help other mothers achieve a complete and wholesome recovery.

We are amazed by the holistic array of services available, with post-partum care being one of the many! They even have a retail section for herbal soups, teas and baths, breastfeeding aids and apparels.

Though not quite the typical spa or wellness centre, we are drawn to how much attention is given to creating support groups for moms and dads here. Founded by a UK-trained midwife and mom of two, and very popular with expats, we love the focus on emotional support for new parents in Singapore. Think along the lines of motherhood groups, coffee mornings and even play groups. Who’s to say these don’t contribute significantly to wellness! Dads are welcomed too for many of their activities.

Offering in-home services focused on both mom and infant, we spotted some unique services beyond their postnatal and baby massages. Warm moxibustion, vaginal steaming and even baby’s first haircut called out to us. Not to mention the “star” of the establishment, baby listener Ou Zi Ming who helps moms decode their babies’ cries – something that will definitely come in handy?

Here’s an entire postpartum care centre located at Sentosa, promising the ultimate care ranging from three-day quick support to a 28-day full service support for mom and tot. Nurses and a lactation consultation onsite provide much-needed support for moms, who can take time off for maternal-focused activities and postpartum massages and facials, or arrange for baby massages. They even have their own app, allowing mothers continued support even beyond the stay.

While this is an established movement specialist in pilates and GYROTONICSŽ, we found their postnatal recovery programme for new mommies useful, structured with safe, low-impact mat exercises intended to benefit moms in recovering strength, regain confidence and retrain the body. They even throw in a free Ritmic ball for participants!
