Reviewer: Leona and family

KidsFest was born in 2012, and is a festival looked forward to by many young families. KidsFest! 2023 includes 3 children theatre performances, and this review will be of our experience at Tabby McTat, a live adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s much-loved picture book about a busker, Fred and his cat!

If you want to find out what to expect at the performance, read on about what we felt about it!

High Energy Performance For Kids

Photo by Leona, at the end of the performance

I haven’t really taken my young kids to any live performance so I was initially quite concerned about how my boys were going to behave and/or react. However, upon arriving at the theatre, my worries were soon dissipated.

The highly enthusiastic and committed actors were already on stage and they were joyfully singing and/or playing on their guitars – which got everyone (both the adults and kids) excited and in good spirits for the show.

Its just 4 People On Stage

I was really impressed by the high level performance by the four cast members, who took on all the different personas/roles/parts, as well as changed the sceneries themselves. It was a really interesting and brilliant way of keeping the audience – especially the kids – entertained through the entire show as the audience could enjoy watching a new character/scenery unfold through a change of costumes/props.

The Kids Loved It - So Did We

The show was about an hour long, but we were all thoroughly engaged throughout the whole performance, which involved the use of humorous and playful dialogue, music, catchy tunes and dance. My 5-year-old absolutely loved the show, and it was a joy to watch him cracking up with laughter many times during the show. My 3-year-old loved the songs and was still singing to the songs even after the show ended.

There was also an interactive segment in the show, where everyone in the audience was asked to get up on their feet and follow through a series of simple, yet fun actions! It was heartening to see both the young and old happily participating in this part of the show!

Watch Out For The WOW Moment

Nonetheless, I must say the biggest “wow” factor for me is the production’s creative use of atmospheric lighting. There was a part in the show when all the lights in the theatre suddenly went dark and “stars” were projected on the backdrop of the stage, which left everyone in the audience mesmerised!

A lively and heart-warming production that is highly suitable for kids between the ages of 4 to 6 - so do stay tune to KidsFest for their future festivals!
