Park your phones in your pockets and thoughts of staying cool at home, instead hit the outdoors where there’s much to do aside from basking in the warm sunshine. Here are 7 outdoor activities you can do with your family to get you started!

A popular tourist destination, Batu Caves is a Hindu temple, featuring several shrines, intricate sculptures and paintings within the high-ceiling limestone hill caves. The Temple Cave, the biggest out of the three main and few smaller caves, can be reached via a hike up the 200 plus steep stairs. Keep an eye out for the troop of monkeys around the stairs waiting to ambush you.

Situated at the edge of Perdana Botanical Gardens, the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is landscaped to mirror a rainforest habitat, complete with lush greenery and cascading waterfall. The gazebos and bridge over koi pond add to the aesthetic of the place. Housed within such a scenic park are an extensive collection of fluttering butterflies, massive beetles, and other creepy crawlies.

Located in the city centre, KLCC Park provides a quick dose of invigorating nature should the loud noises and busy schedules of the city life get too much. Indulge your downtime being mesmerized by the trees rustling in the wind, gazing at the calming water and by taking a relaxing walk around the park. There is also a children’s playground in the park to keep the little ones entertained.

If you’re looking for a brief reprieve from the hustle and bustle of city life, there’s KLCC Park and if you’re looking for a refuge, there’s the KL Forest Eco Park (Taman Eko Rimba KL). Formerly known as the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, the KL Forest Eco Park is the oldest protected forest reserve. You can take a scenic walk across the 200 m canopy walkway and admire the city skyline from the bridge towers at this natural rainforest.

Taking a step into the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, you’ll be greeted by the sight of birds flying freely in a natural landscape of waterfall, pool, gardens and verdant greenery. Reputed to be one of the world’s largest covered bird parks, the park is divided into four zones. Zones 1 to 3 is free-flight walk-in aviary, with Zone 3 dedicated to Hornbills, and Zone 4 houses birds in cages, enclosures and smaller-scale aviaries.

Situated in the scenic Perdana Botanical Gardens, the park is in close proximity to several other attractions such as the Islamic Arts Museum, the National Mosque of Malaysia and the Royal Malaysian Police Museum.

Zoo Negara, home to over 450 species, is an open concept zoo, where over 5000 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, live in a spacious landscape mirroring their natural habitat. There are a total of 16 exhibits featuring animals such as snakes, monkeys, elephants, kangaroos, birds, penguins, bears, giant pandas, fishes, insects and other animals.

The zoo also has a kids-friendly area consisting of domestic animals like rabbits and chickens running freely. Known as Children’s World, the exhibit also includes a mini-rainforest, a small aviary, fish pond, horse barn and a playground.
