Standing splendidly at Kampong Glam is Masjid Sultan, also known as the Sultan Mosque. An interesting fact about this impressive building that has stood for more than a century is that the base of both the huge golden domes are actually embellished with glass bottle ends contributed by Muslims with lower-income. It is so because Sultan Hussein Shah, who built the mosque, wanted every Muslims to be able to pitch in to the building of the mosque.

For those days when you don’t really want to run around the playground, chasing after your little tykes as the sun beats down on you, I suggest a stroll through Esplanade Park. The park is wonderfully undisturbed, providing a reprieve from the usual hustle and bustle in the city.

Located within the park is a children’s playground that gives off old-school feels and a wall of bells (about which I’ve long been curious about, why bells?) that you can play tunes with.

Walk a little further in and you’ll come across historical monuments such as the elaborate Tan Kim Seng Fountain, the Cenotaph, a war memorial honouring soldiers who lost their lives in both wars, and the Lim Bo Seng Memorial.
