Whether you’re celebrating Deepavali or not, here is a list of festive activities you can enjoy with your family!

Well-known as the Festival of Lights, Deepavali is the celebration of the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. During the festival, families perform prayers light up lamps around their house and share feasts with their loved ones. Anyone can join in the celebrations and this year, with many events going digital, it’s much easier to join in! 

Here are 5 events happening in the virtual world and around Singapore that you can check out with your little ones! 

1. ACM Celebrates Deepavali

Location: Online and Onsite

Fee: Free

Celebrate the Festival of Lights, Deepavali, with the Asian Civilisation Museum. Go on a Deepavali Discovery Trail at the museum and discover objects that are associated with this important Hindu festival. Don't miss the colourful flower rangoli at the ACM Lobby if you are visiting too! 

There will be other performances and content happening on the online space too! Do check out the ACM website for more details. 

2. Celebrate Deepavali 2021: Learn the Art of Flower Garland Tying

Location: Geyland Serai Heritage Gallery
Date: 6 Nov 2021
Hour: 2 pm - 3 pm
Fee: $5

Flower garlands play an integral role in Indian culture, often as a sign of blessing and honour or as religious offerings. Join us to learn more about the use of different types of flowers in Indian customs through a fresh flower display and enjoy making your own string of flowers!

This 1 hour Flower Tying Workshop is available at just $5 and is open to all ages!

3. Celebrate Deepavali 2021 - Dance with Us: Oyilattam!

Date: 7 Nov 2021
Hour: 2.30 pm - 3.30 pm
Fee: Free

Oyilattam, meaning dance of grace, is an Indian traditional folk dance comprising elegant and rhythmic steps with the use of two handkerchiefs. Come join us for this lively Zoom dance workshop with your friends or family!

This workshop will be conducted in English and is open to all ages and fitness levels. Sign up today!

4. Catch The Deepavali Light Up @ Little India

Location: LIttle India
Date: Ongoing
Hour: Evening
Fee: Free

Deepavali Utsavam 2021 brings with it the inauguration of the beautiful lights along Serangoon and Race Course Roads! Come bathe in the beautiful glow of lights. There are more than 50 arches along Serangoon Road and more than a dozen on the parellel Race Course Road. The arches carry colourful motifs of peacocks lamps, kolam and rangoli designs!

5. Onsite & Online Programmes @ Indian Heritage Centre

Location: Online and at Indian Heritage Centre
Date: 1 Oct - 14 Nov 2021
Hour: 7 pm 
Fee: Free

From 1 October to 14 November 2021, enjoy an exciting array of on-site and online programmes presented by the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) and immerse yourself in the Deepavali spirit. Take in the sights, sounds and revelry of the festival as we collectively usher light into our hearts and minds as individuals, as a community, and as a nation at the Welcoming Light celebrations by the IHC.
